“Ready, Set, Wear It!” Life Jacket Event

Taking place May 19th, 2018 at the Driftless Sports Convergence, Omni Center, Onalaska, WI

Break a world record with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary La Crosse Flotilla hosting a Ready, Set, Wear It Life Jacket event on May 19th, 2018.  The La Crosse Flotilla joins participants around the globe to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available for outdoor enthusiasts, including inflatable life jackets and setting a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated.

Ready, Set, Wear It is part of the yearlong Safe Boating Campaign to promote boating safety and voluntary, consistent wear of life jackets. The local event will take place on May 19th at the Driftless Sports Convergence at their booth.

More information about the event can be found at www.readysetwearit.com. “Join us in helping raise awareness about boating safely in the 7 Rivers Region,” says Melissa Kadrmas, Flotilla Commander for the La Crosse Flotilla.

The previous world record was set in 2015, with 10,917 participants gathered at 257 events held around the world to set a new record for the number of participants who wore an inherently buoyant life jacket.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2016, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

Jackets of all sizes will be available for visitors to put on and be registered as part of the world record.  Participants may also “Donate and Swap” life jackets for a different sizes from young children to adults.

Anglers, hunters, paddlers and other boats users are encouraged to attend. For more information, driftlesssports.com for event details.
